You might be paying too much for gas.

Ohio law gives you the right to choose your natural gas supplier. Most people don't know — and pay far more than they have to.

Common questions

Quick answers before you dig in.

What happens to my service if I switch? +

Nothing changes about your physical service. Your utility (Columbia Gas, Duke, Enbridge, etc.) still maintains the pipes, still responds to leaks and emergencies, and still delivers gas to your home. The only thing that changes is who you pay for the gas itself — and that shows up as a different company name on the supply section of your bill.

No interruption, no equipment changes. The switch takes effect within one to two billing cycles.

Is there a catch? +

Energy Choice is legitimate and regulated by PUCO — but watch for:

  • Introductory "teaser" rates — low prices that only last 1 month, then jump to market rate
  • Cancellation fees — $50–$150 is common on fixed plans if you leave early
  • Auto-renewal — some contracts auto-renew at a higher variable rate
  • Door-to-door sales — you're never obligated to sign up on the spot

When in doubt, contact PUCO at 1-800-686-7826.

How do I switch? +

1. Find a plan you like (start with your city page or the calculator).

2. Click through to the supplier's site and sign up online — you'll need your utility account number from your bill.

3. That's it. Your utility confirms the switch within 1–2 billing cycles. Nothing else changes.

What is the "default rate" (SCO)? +

The Standard Choice Offer (SCO) is the default gas supply rate your utility charges if you haven't picked a competing supplier. Most Ohioans are on it without knowing.

The SCO changes monthly with wholesale gas markets — it can spike significantly in winter. Competing suppliers offer fixed rates that lock your price for 6–24 months, protecting you from those spikes.

Why we built this

Ohio deregulated its natural gas market so residents could benefit from competition. But most people — especially older homeowners — have no idea the PUCO Energy Choice program even exists. They stay on the utility's default rate indefinitely, often paying twice what they need to. Ohio Rate Watch exists to change that. The information is public. We just make it useful.
